Dry Tattooing (MCA needling)

Nina Bees Bespoke Luxury Facial: Services

Is this for you? Yes! Dry Needling MCA for Scars, Burns and Stretch Marks improves the texture, depth and colour contrast of both fresh and old stretch marks, helping them blend in more with the surrounding skin. A specific technique of dry tattooing is used along with detailed after care for best results.

What is Dry Tattooing?

Dry Tattooing, also known as Dry Needling or MCA Needling, has been used for many years to enhance the appearance of your skin and body without the need for invasive surgery. MCA Needling began as a treatment to relax and reduce scar tissue and became an alternative treatment to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, especially for darker skins where laser treatments or  Brazilian Camouflage Tattooing would not be advised.

What it does is creating a micro trauma targeting specific areas of skin, helping to stimulate collagen production and prompt the skin to rejuvenate itself. This treatment works directly on damaged skin, which can dramatically improve the appearance of surgery scars, burns, small trauma scars, wrinkles, fine lines, stretch marks, acne scars, chicken pox scars and sun damaged skin.

By using medical needling we are in fact tricking the brain to believe the skin has been cut and the process of healing needs to kick off and then takes place naturally by creating an inflammatory healing response. This promotes internal repair and rejuvenation. Natural growth factors are released to stimulate reformation and deposition of fresh collagen to repair the scar.

Any micro needling treatment essentially brings new life into damaged skin. No pigment is tattooed into the skin, however pigmentation begins to normalise as a result.

Note also that Dry Needling works on the specific areas of affected skin only, using the same principles causing healthy new collagen growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatment do I need?

Generally, we recommend three session course about four or six weeks apart. Gradually, you will be evaluated by our therapist and he will determine if you need more treatments.

Note that following the aftercare protocol is extremely important to get the best chance of a successful result. The body healing response plays a big part in the final result, but this is not something we can control on our side!

Is this treatment suitable to all skin types?

Dry tattooing can be used on all colours of skin, but dark skins prone to over pigmentation and keloid scarring are not advised to go ahead. Once approved for treatment, scarring, hypo or hyper pigmentation are unlikely risks, as no heat is used and the surface of the skin is not removed.

All these questions will be assessed during the initial pre-treatment consultation.

Pre-treatment preparation:

Please try to follow the points below:

  • Have a good scrub on the area to be treated in order to remove dead skin cells.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before (and 24 hours after) treatment.

  • In the few days prior to treatment, moisturise or oil your skin so it is in good condition. Dry, flaky skin would not take the ink as well and the results could not be as good.

  • Make sure you eat before your appointment as this will help with pain thresholds and feeling well for treatment.

  • On the day of the treatment, do not use any lotions or oils on the area you want treated as this can interfere with the ink placement.

Does it hurt?

The treatment is similar to normal Micro Needling procedure. We use numbing cream before treatment to reduce to a minimal the pain but we recommend taking some paracetamol before treatment if you have a low pain threshold. Please do NOT take aspirin as this will affect blood clotting at the treatment site.

How does it look after treatment?

The procedure causes blood to come into the treated area, without removing the top layers of skin. Over the weeks and months new collagen is formed i.e. healthy new skin instead of poor quality scar tissue, stretched or creased skin. A 20-50% improvement can be seen in just one session, with a course of 3 recommended for best results.

What is the aftercare ?

You should follow the below points as much as possible to get the best and fastest healing process:

  • Use an SPF of 40+ (even in a cloudy day as the sunrays still affect badly the skin!)

  • Avoid sunbeds, saunas for 1 week, exercise/workout for 1 week, swimming for 2 weeks.

  • Avoid showering on the area treated for 24 hours.

  • The area will naturally scab as it starts to heal – do not scratch it if it itches! This is extremely important. If you scratch it and it starts bleeding, not only will you lose some pigment, but you may cause scarring.

How long do the results last?

The results are permanent once you have healed. That does not mean that one treatment solves all problems, as some scars are worse and require multiple treatments. Oftentimes, the effects from multiple treatments are paramount to that of those being treated one or two times.  Furthermore, each set of scar improvements is permanent
